The College of Humanities and Social Sciences of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), has announced plans to commence a Doctorate of Philosophy (PhD) in Law programme.

The programme is one of the innovative projects by the authorities to deepen knowledge in legal education, especially at the highest level of learning, to boost the nation’s development processes.

Professor Imoro Braimah, Provost of the College, who disclosed this, explained that the programme was in response to addressing emerging challenges in the legal field and other areas of endeavour.

This was contained in an opening address he delivered at the 52nd congregation ceremony of the University in Kumasi.

The first session of this year’s event, saw the College presenting certificates to 1, 552 graduates from the Faculties of Law, Social Sciences and the School of Business.

Out of this, 955 were males and 597 females.

A total of 223 passed out with First Class Division, representing 14 per cent of the total students graduating this year, an increase over last year’s 11 per cent.

Prof. Braimah said the KNUST had made significant gains in deepening law education, citing the number of its Law students who had won many local and international awards in organised competitive programmes.

He appealed to stakeholders to come on board as they strive to establish a law moot court at the Faculty of Law to give students hands-on experience.

The Provost noted that the School of Business had begun engagement with the private sector, especially the Association for Small-Scale Industries (ASSI), organising refresher courses for the various artisans to build their capacity for efficient work.

He affirmed the College’s determination to sustain its partnership with government and industry with the notion to making their research findings more beneficial to the society and nation in general.

On infrastructural development, Prof. Braimah said the leadership would not relent in finding innovative means to upgrade teaching and learning facilities.

They were putting in shape lecture theatres, laboratories, staff accommodation and offices in order to achieve their mandate of providing quality education in science and technology.

The Reverend Alexander Kwaku Yeboah, a Consultant to the Ghana Civil Aviation Authority, in a speech, encouraged social scientists to strive to bring to bear the knowledge they have acquired in their fields of studies for sustainable development of the nation.
