Concerns over low female enrollment in science and technology study are receiving attention at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology.

Less than 10 percent of females at the university presently pursue courses in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics.

The school is therefore lowering the cut-off points in science and technology-related courses for the 2016/2017 academic year in order to absorb more women.

Newly-inducted Vice-Chancellor, Professor Kwasi Obiri-Danso, says special unit will be set up to design and implement a mentorship programme for girls at the pre-tertiary level.

He is proposing Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics Unit will target and whip up interest of female students in second-cycle institutions.

The unit to be headed by a Female Professor will liaise with relevant state departments and agencies to carry out the project.

Professor Obiri Danso observes limited numbers of females in the field poses a challenge to the national development effort.

“Our key priority is student success particularly in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) education and careers. STEM is widely regarded as critical to the socio-economic development of nations.”

The institute plans to retool laboratories and studios, resource research units and provide opportunity for each student to own a computer to facilitate learning.

Professor Obiri-Danso pledged commitment, through collaboration, to expanding Information and Communication Technology including free access to internet connection for student in spite of the cost.

The newly inducted Vice-Chancellor is envisaging more effective partnership with industry.

Under the initiative known as the “Vice Chancellor’s Quarterly Meetings” researchers and industry players will discuss societal challenges.
