Spokesperson for the Rawlings family Kofi Adams says he expects President Mills to rescind his decision to contest the flagbearership position of the National Democratic Congress (NDC)and support Nana Konadu to lead the party in 2012.
According to him, the NDC can only retain power in 2012 if Mrs. Rawlings leads the party as the presidential candidate.
The ruling NDC will hold its delegates’ congress from July 8 to July 10, 2011 in Sunyani to elect a flagbearer to lead the party in the 2012 general elections.
After closing nominations on Tuesday May 10, three persons have so far picked up forms to contest for the slot. They are President J.E.A. Mills who is seeking re-election, former First Lady Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings and Dr. Ekwow Spio-Garbrah who is vying for the position for the second time.
Speaking on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen programme Tuesday, Kofi Adams said Nana Konadu's campaign team would be very happy if President Mills decides not to submit his forms to contest the party’s flagbearership to give Nana Konadu an acclamation in the congress.
He believes the NDC can better strategize very easily for election 2012 with Nana Koandu Agyeman-Rawlings as the presidential candidate to face Nana Akufo-Addo, flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).
The Deputy General Secretary of the ruling party noted that Nana Konadu is the only candidate who can revive, rebuild and reposition the party in such a way that would assured victory in the 2012 elections for the party.
He stressed that Nana Konadu is not a woman of "straw" but a woman of "timber" who is completely unshaken but focused on unseating President Mills in the upcoming congress.
Commenting on Dr. Ekwow Spio-Garbrah joining the contest, Kofi Adams said the NDC is a democratic party and so any qualified person in the party is entitled to pick nomination forms.
