The NPP’s Gomoa East Constituency in the Central Region has settled on a business executive, Kojo Asomani as their parliamentary candidate for the 2016 Parliamentary elections.
He polled 205 votes as against 199 by his contender, Marcus Yaw Danso.
It was the last constituency primary of the opposition NPP to be held in the Central Region for the 2016 election, Joy News’ Central Regional correspondent Richard Kwadwo Nyarko reports.
The re-run became imminent after the NPP June Parliamentary primaries recorded a tie between Kojo Asomani and Dr. Marcus Yaw Danso with each polling 153 votes.
After the first election, a party member, Adolf Nfodwo, who is a supporter of Apostle Dr Marqus Yaw Danso, filed a suit at the Agona Swedru High Court against the Central Regional Electoral Officer of the NPP, the Regional secretariat of the NPP and Kojo Asomani.
He prayed the court to declare Marcus Danso as the validly elected parliamentary candidate for the constituency, citing some irregularities that allegedly occurred during the counting of the ballots.
He also prayed the court to direct the Central Regional NPP to declare Marcus Danso as the validly elected candidate with 154 votes, while the third defendant, Mr Kojo Asomani should be put on record as having secured 153 votes.
After the court dismissed the case, the two top contenders campaigned vigorously to annex the candidature.
Today’s election was conducted in an atmosphere of peace and produced Kojo Asomani who secured 205 votes as the Parliamentary candidate for the Gomoa East Constituency.
The 35 year old Marketing and Business Executive could not hide his joy because this is his 4th attempt at becoming a parliamentary candidate.
The Apostle Dr. Yaw Marcus Danso who polled 199 votes, 6 votes shy of the votes of the winner pledged his support to ensure that the seat comes back to the NPP
