Former WBO bantamweight champion, Alfred Kotey insists he will continue fighting despite calls for his retirement.
Kotey had to retire in the fourth round against youthful sensation Frederick Lawson who had punished him over three rounds. The once feared bantamweight king, now 43, was a complete deviation from his devastating form which he was known for in the early 90s. The youthful Lawson combined crisp punching with good footwork in the ring which made it almost impossible for Kotey to reach him.
The former WBO champion found it tough to cope with Lawson’s stinging jabs and failed to respond to the bell for the fourth round. This win has propelled the undefeated boxer’s record to 16 wins. “I was given late notice for this bout but had to squeeze the time and make it because I didn’t want to disappoint the promoter. Lawson was a good boxer on the night and if he maintains his focus can go very far with his professional career,” he said.
In a separate interview with Joy Sports, Lawson said “I have a lot of respect for the former world champion and have learnt a lot from him tonight.”
This bout was one of the highlights of the ‘Now or Never’ fight night put together by Golden Mike Promotions which was initially supposed to be headlined by a IBO championship between Ghana’s Joseph Agbeko and Michael Domingo of the Philippines. The event attracted low patronage with most of the fans seated at the ringside.
Joshua Okine, the Bukom Tsatsu dominated his Uruguaian opponent Rafael Sosa Pintos, to win last Saturday’s international light middleweight contest at the El-Wak Stadium in Accra, Ghana.
Okine was the more aggressive of the two and managed to score points with his relative speed and sustained attack to Pintos. The Uruguaian however gave Okine a tough run by replying some of the jabs. He was, however, deducted points five times during the bout for hitting Okine below the belt.
In other bouts Obodai Sai a former Commonwealth Champion, cruised onto a unanimous win over Ishmael Tetteh in a super lightweight contest, recording 98-93, 98-93 and 98-92 on the score cards. Samuel Amoako recorded a fifth round technical knockout win over Ramon Esperanza of Paraguay in an international lightweight contest after the latter dropped on the canvas four times. Emmanuel Quartey stopped Nurudeeen Boyefio in the fifth round in a super-bantamweight contest while Ishamel Aryeetey defeated Odarlai Lamptey unanimously in a featherweight contest.
