Porcupine Warriors Kumasi Asante Kotoko snatched a dramatic late win in the Super Clash against bitter rivals Accra Hearts of Oak at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium.
A Michael Akuffo screamer deep into injury time ensured Kotoko beat Hearts for the first time in seven years in Kumasi and opened an unassailable 12 point lead in the 2011/12 Glo Premier League.
But the 2-1 victory was not without drama. Hearts with ten men had crawled back with a Mahatma Otoo thunderbolt of a free-kick on the stroke of full time and with seconds to go, Akuffo ensured the Reds picked maximum points.
Laryea Kingston was red carded five minutes into the second half after a leg breaking challenge on his Kotoko attacker but that rather appeared to have buoyed the Phobians.
It was an incredible game of two halves with the Warriors dominating play in the first half and getting their noses in front courtesy a Michael Nti Boakye header.
An unmarked Boakye leapt well to head home a corner kick with the Phobian defence caught napping.
It was still the Warriors who were thirsty for more goals.
Acheampong proved a mouthful for the Hearts defence but Osei Bonsu proved equal to the task for most part.
After recess the Phobians were handed another big blow after Laryea Kingston was given an early shower. His outstretched leg caught the Kotoko midfielder in the ankle and looked quite a dangerous tackle.
With ten men and a goal down Hearts lifted their game and played as if their lives depended on it.
Twice, Hearts players and supporters screamed for a penalty but Solomon Mordey in the middle of affairs had a better view and waved play on.
Hearts again suffered another setback after CK Ackunnor was forced into exhausting his substitution when his best performing man, Philemon McCarthy got injured after an incredible save. Sammy Adjei came in and he is no stranger at all to such derbies.
The clock ticked fast and Hearts fought on in desperate search for an equalizer. The equalizer came and in splendour.
Mordey awarded the Phobians a freekick on the stroke of full time; Otoo right footed, and Owusu Sefa, left footed stood behind the ball with Sulama in post for Kotoko little idea who will take the kick. Otoo stepped up and fired a bullet which took a ricochet of the goal post before entering the net.
The equaliser had come. Hearts players and fans were in ecstatic mood. But their celebration was cut short with a breathtaking 30 yard screamer from Michael Akuffo which earned the Porcupine Warriors a well deserved victory at home.
