The Kpone-Katamanso Municipal Health Directorate has raised a health alert after confirming two cholera cases within the municipality and awaiting the results of other suspected cases.
Dr Esther Priscilla Biamah Danquah, the Kpone-Katamanso Municipal Health Director, confirmed this in an interview with the Ghana News Agency (GNA) on Monday.
Dr Danquah said the two cases were confirmed late last week, adding that multiple suspected cases had also been reported from various communities in the municipality.
She gave the assurance that the health teams were on high alert and stressed the need for intensive public education on cholera prevention, noting that proper hygiene practices and environmental sanitation were critical to preventing the spread of the disease.
“Cholera is primarily spread through contaminated water and food, so we need to educate our residents on maintaining personal and food hygiene, as well as proper disposal of waste,” she noted.
She said the Municipal Health Directorate was currently rolling out measures to contain the situation, including the distribution of chlorine for water treatment and public health campaigns in affected areas.
She said her outfit was working closely with the Kpone-Katamanso Municipal Assembly to manage the situation and prevent the spread of cholera in the area and across the entire municipality.
Dr Danquah called on the Assembly and community leaders to support health officials to ensure that residents adhered to health protocols and maintain good sanitation practices.
She advised residents to seek immediate medical care if they experienced symptoms such as severe diarrhoea or vomiting, which are common signs of cholera.
The Ghana Health Service first announced the outbreak of cholera in the Ada East and the Ada West District on October 11, 2024, having recorded a total of nine cases.
