Some residents of Kumasi are calling for the immediate ban on importation of cigarette as a way to discourage smoking in the country. World Health Organization statistics indicate tobacco was the second highest cause of death in the world. Some health professionals and Ghanaians have been advocating prompt action on the passage of the Tobacco Control Bill into law, but that was yet to happen after seven years of preparing the draft. Studies released last week by the Ghana Health Service reveals about nine percent of Junior High School students in Ghana smoke while 28 per cent of children are also exposed to tobacco.
