Chelsea midfielder Frank Lampard has claimed the Blues can take on “anyone” after their 4-1 win over Napoli in the Champions League.
The Blues trailed their Italian opponents 3-1 on aggregate ahead of Wednesday night's clash at Stamford Bridge but turned the tie around thanks to goals from Lampard, John Terry and Didier Drogba before Branislav Ivanovic's extra time winner.
Real Madrid and Barcelona also sealed their progress to the next round this week and remain clear favorites for this season’s competition.
However, Lampard is unfazed by the presence of the Spanish giants, claiming that Chelsea can take on any team.
"We’re just happy to be in the hat. At 3-1 down coming here you’re just happy to get through. We will enjoy it tonight and wait and see," he said, speaking to ITV after the match. "They are the big two [Madrid and Barcelona] but we have a lot of strength in there. If we play with the same desire as tonight we can take on anyone."
The England midfielder also insisted the result could be a springboard for the west London side after its well-documented struggle for consistency this season.
"Well it is absolutely huge [the result]. It was important that whatever happened tonight we showed a spirit and desire to stay in the competition," Lampard continued. "It has been a difficult season, but a performance like that can change things for us so it’s very important that we kick on from here."
Blues captain John Terry was equally delighted with the victory and hailed the team spirit shown by his team-mates in overturning the aggregate deficit.
"That could top them all for sure [Champions League ties at Stamford Bridge]. The lads put on a great display," he said. "Really solid, really resilient, as well as the firepower going forward. It was really impressive watching the lads come on and fighting right until the end. We proved we’re a team tonight, and I think first and foremost that is what we are all about. That desire, that togetherness."
Lampard went on to praise Ivanovic’s goal and performance, highlighting the Serbian’s display as one which typified what he feels Chelsea are all about.
"He finished it unbelievably, like a striker," he said. "He deserved that. He was fantastic tonight. He was a symbol of the kind of determination we showed the way he played."
Finally, Terry refused to be drawn on comments regarding Roman Abramovich’s decision to part company with Andre Villas-Boas, saying that the players just need to focus on their job.
"As I said yesterday, that was the board’s decision. All we can do is stick together and get on with what we do best and that is playing football and winning football matches," he concluded.
