Round-up: Jermain Defoe scored a hat-trick to steer kamikaze Sunderland past League Two Exeter in a League Cup goal-feast at the Stadium of Light.
Defoe struck twice in the first half and rounded off a 6-3 win three minutes from time but only after Paul Tisdale's enterprising visitors had twice clawed back to level the tie.
Jack Rodwell also helped himself to a brace for the Black Cats but boss Dick Advocaat will be concerned with the three defensive howlers which had allowed the visitors to go in level at the break.
Premier League newcomers Watford suffered a League Cup upset in a 1-0 loss at Preston North End. Marnick Vermijl's eighth minute strike gave Championship side Preston victory over Watford at Deepdale with the defender on-loan from Sheffield Wednesday netting from close range.
Ricky Van Wolfswinkel finally ended his long drought in front of goal as Norwich edged through with a 2-1 win over Rotherham at New York Stadium.

The Dutch striker, who spent last season on loan at French side St Etienne, bagged his first Canaries goal since his debut over two years ago to make the game safe after Jonny Howson's classy 23rd-minute opener.
The striker's potential return to form could come at a handy time for boss Alex Neil after reports that Lewis Grabban, who has been linked with a return to Bournemouth, went AWOL from the team hotel after being told he would not feature in the starting XI in South Yorkshire. That goal was also important in the context of the game as it came after a long spell of Rotherham pressure where the Premier League side were reliant on goalkeeper Declan Rudd to keep them in the lead as he pulled off a string of brilliant saves.
However, he could do nothing about Paul Green's 80th-minute volley which was ultimately just a consolation for Steve Evans' side. Youngster Joe Dodoo hit a stunning debut hat-trick as Leicester maintained their flying start to the season with a 4-1 win at Bury.

The 20-year-old academy product opened the scoring as the Foxes eased into a 2-0 half-time lead with Andrej Kramaric also on target in the second-round tie at Gigg Lane. Danny Mayor replied as Bury showed some fight in the second period but Dodoo settled the contest with two cool finishes in the final four minutes.
QPR were embarrassed in the League Cup yet again as Carlisle beat them 2-1 at Loftus Road. Substitute Jason Kennedy netted a 79th-minute winner for the League Two side, who led through Derek Asamoah's goal before Jay Emmanuel-Thomas equalised.
It was another League Cup debacle for Rangers, who have now been knocked out of the competition by lower-division opposition in eight of the last 10 seasons with five of those defeats coming at home
