A Lecturer at the University of Ghana, Professor Dominic Edoh, has called for an objective analysis of the factors responsible for reported abysmal results of Basic Education Certificate Education (BECE) so that appropriate interventions could be prescribed to reverse the trend. Speaking at a book launch in Koforidua, he said the reported appalling data of recent BECE results, was indicative of a serious problem, which required the attention of well-meaning citizens, “devoid of political push-around, which some social problems in Ghana sometimes evoke”. The Ghanaian Times, a state-owned daily newspaper, recently quoted officials of the Ministry of Education as saying that nearly 48 percent of pupils that sat for the BECE in 2007 failed. Prof Edoh restated the need for collaborative efforts by students, teachers and the community to resolve the snag. He said none of the entities could entirely be blamed for the situation, although there was the need for more motivated teachers. Touching on the book titled: “Secrets of Success”, Prof Edoh said it reflected the need for people to become meaningful participants in the development efforts of their country. He was worried that only few Ghanaians were willing to invest in academic works such as book writing, although it is through such channels that answers could be found to some of the problems that had gripped the nation. He commended Mr Charles Amankwah, the author, for his effort. Source: GNA
