The Ghana National Education Campaign Coalition has charged government to set standards for school structures in the country to ensure the safety of school children. Leslie Tettey, the Executive Director of the Coalition, told Joy News schools that fail to meet the standards should not be allowed to operate. According to him, lack of proper supervision coupled with lack of "conducive and appreciable" principles in the construction of schools, have left many schools in deplorable state, thus putting the lives of school kids in danger. His concerns come on the back of the death of an eight year old class three pupil of Greater Care International School who died after falling into his school's latrine on Tuesday. The boy, Kamel Bashiru has since been buried. "It is a sad story", Mr Tettey said, adding children go to school to be educated and "not to encounter such problems". This, he indicated has exposed the duty of authorities to protect the rights of children. He is therefore demanding a "basic standards" set for structures meant for school. The Executive Director of the Coalition also bemoaned the fact that the "little standards" we have in place are not enforced. "I think that as a country we should have some basic standards for every school so that whether it is private or public, and especially private before you are certified to operate you must have met these conditions." According to Mr Tettey, "A lot of facilities are in a state of disrepair. There should be more rigorous inspection of school infrastructure to ensure that schools that are not complied are sanctioned." Supervisors appointed to ensure compliance should be made to answer questions about the poor infrastructure in schools, he demanded. He conceded that the country has "a serious issue at hand" as most of the schools buildings preceded Ghana's independence. He wants government to turn attention to the old structures while "pumping money" into the construction of new schools.
