Two Togolese nationals are currently in the custody of the Jasikan Municipal Police Command for attempting to register in the ongoing voter registration exercise in Ghana.
The arrest was made by National Security officers on Sunday, May 19, who subsequently handed the suspects over to the police for further legal processing.
According to National Security officers, leaders of a political party in the area allegedly brought the suspects to the Jasikan Municipal Registration Centre on Sunday.
The officers reported that after the suspects were detained, political leaders from the Buem Constituency visited the police station in an attempt to secure bail for the two individuals, but their efforts were unsuccessful.
This incident follows a similar arrest last week in Asokore Mampong in the Ashanti Region, where two Nigerien nationals were caught attempting to register to vote.
These individuals were detained because they could not provide satisfactory explanations to the Electoral Commission officers and the police regarding their intentions to register despite not being Ghanaians.
The involvement of political party leaders in such activities has raised concerns about the integrity of the voter registration process.
Authorities are urging the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities to ensure the credibility of the electoral roll.
In response to these incidents, the Electoral Commission has reiterated its commitment to conducting a fair and transparent registration exercise.
They have assured the public that all necessary measures are being taken to prevent non-Ghanaians from participating in the registration process.
