Minister of Transport, Dzifa Ativor has hinted, government will be laying off workers of Ghana Railway Company due to poor performance of staff and soaring debts.
She made this known at Parliament's Public Accounts Committee sitting on Wednesday, August 28.
"The taxpayers' money is being used to pay workers who under normal circumstances should be working from eight to five...but because the [trains] are not there for them to operate [and] there is no money to lay some off and give them something to take home [compensation], they are still there", she stated.
Dzifa Ativor said continuous payment of salaries to the close to 2,000 workforce of the Railways Company for no work done is "a big challenge" to Government.
She revealed that the company is heavily indebted to many service providers while some of its assets have been seized by creditors.
Dzifa Attivor told the Committee government is considering its next line of action to resolve the issue.
Meanwhile, ranking member on the Committee, Alhaji Ibrahim Dey Abubakari, says the Committee will ensure that its recommendation on the Auditor General’s report are implemented.
He said before asking institutions and government agencies to appear before the Committee, PAC will first enquire whether they (agency or institution) have been able to implement recommendations previously proposed to them.
"If they fail, then we will let the whole public know what we are after, so that public interest will be catered for", said Alhaji Abubakari.
