A 50 year old man has been reported dead at the Ridge Hospital in Accra, where doctors are on strike, Joy News can confirm.
The wailing daughter of the deceased told Joy News his father was suffering from hypertension and was rushed to the Ridge Hospital but there was only one doctor on duty and who could not attend to him leading to his unfortunate passing.
"He had hypertension and he couldn’t breathe. When I got here, he was given oxygen but he was still breathing. Along the line his eyes were rolling,” Christiana Nortey narrated.
She said her father was not given a bed to lie on because there was no doctor to attend to him.
Joy News checks indicate only one female doctor was on duty at the time of the incident.
The unfortunate demise comes only a day after the doctors swore they were not going to admit emergency cases to register their strongest protest against the Fair Wages and Salary Commission and government who they accuse of stalling negotiation for their migration onto the Single Spine Salary Structure.
National President of the Ghana Medical Association Adom Winful at a press conference stated the government and the Fair Wages Commission should be held responsible for human lives that may be lost if this strike persisted and not the doctors.
Joy News’ correspondents across the country reported of dire consequences to patients as the various public health centres increasingly becomes a ‘ghost towns.’
