A Circuit Court in Dormaa Ahenkro has granted bail in the sum of GH¢ 2,000 to Kwadwo Kyeremeh, a chainsaw owner at Diabaa in the Dormaa Municipality, for possessing an unlicensed firearm and threatening to kill a police officer.
He pleaded guilty with explanation, and would reappear on June 24, this year.
Inspector George Kumah told the court, presided over by Isaac Bright Akwantey, that the complainant was a police officer and a member of the Dormaa Municipal Task Force, which was set up to protect natural resources and arrest defaulters, for prosecution.
He said on June 1, this year, between 2000 and 2100 hours, the task force had a tip-off that a chainsaw operator was sawing lumber at Diabaa, but when they got there, the operator had escaped, leaving the chainsaw behind.
Inspector Kumah said the task force took the chainsaw away, and continued with investigations into the illegal operation.
He told the court that the complainant sent his motorbike to a nearby mechanic for repairs the next morning, only to be confronted by the suspect, at gunpoint, to either release his chainsaw immediately, or risk being killed.
Inspector Kumah said the complainant, sensing danger, requested for reinforcement from his outfit, and four of his colleagues were dispatched to assist him to disarm and arrest the suspect.
In his explanation, Kwadwo Kyeremeh told the court that the chainsaw was being used by a friend, who had requested for it to saw some wood which was given to him by ABTS, a timber firm at Berekum.
The suspect also denied having issued any threat to the police officer.
