An economist with the University of Ghana Business School (UGBS), Prof. Godfred Alufar Bokpin, has reiterated his stance on the e-levy, as not being the most sustainable means of raising revenue.
Speaking on the Super Morning Show on Monday, the Prof. Bokpin stated that the e-levy is not the best way to manage the country’s debt situation.
“I recognize government needs more money but the e-levy is not the way to go, the timing and given the government’s digitization drive.
“I have serious reservations about the e-levy. In terms of the principles and the implementation. And I think that is not the way to go,” he said.
He maintained that there are already existing tax avenues that can be explored with greater efficiency and compliance.
The e-levy is still under contention. Parliament is yet to finally decide as to whether it will be implemented or withdrawn.
The last time Parliament deliberated on the levy, the discussion degenerated into a brawl, leading to proceedings being adjourned.
Meanwhile, in a recent update on the current state of the levy, Information Minister, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah stated that “the levy is still on the tables.”
“It is a matter that government considers as key to revenue mobilisation to help deal with the legitimate demands that Ghanaians are making,” he added.
