But for the quick intervention of personnel from the newly created Marine Police on Monday, a suspected bag snatcher at the Labadi Beach would have been lynched by irate mob after he attempted drowning himself.
The suspect who stuttered in mentioning his own name finally uttered Egana Ibrahim.
He was alleged to have snatched a bag belonging to one of the holiday revelers at the beach.
According to the suspect, it was one of his colleagues who snatched the bag and passed it on to him. His account was vehemently contradicted by an eyewitness who asserted that she saw the suspect snatching the said bag.
The suspected narrated to the police how all of a sudden the mob pounced on him and started beating him with anything they could lay hands on.
Sensing danger, having torn between the devil and the deep blue sea, Ibrahim chose the latter. Visibly shaking, he said, he had to take cover from the bone-breaking beatings being meted out to him by running straight into the sea.
Nevertheless, his unrelenting pursuers chased him into the sea to further teach him the unfinished lessons and perhaps facilitate his drowning.
He was however saved by the bell as he caught the attention of the Marine Police who were then patrolling the beach.
Egana Ibrahim could not tell his actual place of residence. He only said he lives at Kaneshie station.
Chief Superintendent Laar, Director of Marine Police who led a team of officers to the beach told myjoyoline.com that he saw the people beating somebody in the sea and therefore rushed to the scene to rescue the young man.
He said the police will commence investigation into the incident.
