Drivers and allied transport workers have taken to the streets of Accra on Tuesday as the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) and other groups stage a major demonstration against the alleged takeover of lands designated for lorry stations by private investors.
The ongoing protest, which has already caused severe traffic disruptions across the city, aims to petition the government to protect public transport infrastructure and safeguard the livelihoods of drivers and traders.
The protest follows a press conference held yesterday, September 15, in Accra by Samuel Amoah, Deputy Public Relations Officer of GPRTU.
Mr. Amoah announced the union’s plan for the large-scale demonstration, describing it as the culmination of long-standing grievances over the continuous encroachment on public land intended for vital transport infrastructure.
Mr. Amoah emphasised that the protest is meant to send a clear message to both the government and private investors about the importance of safeguarding lorry station lands, which are critical to Accra’s transport network.
