The Dental and Medical Council has begun investigations into the death of a-24-year-old lady after she was allegedly denied adequate medical attention at the Korle-Bu Polyclinic.
Speaking to Joy News, Monday, Dr. Eli Atikpui, Registrar of the Dental and Medical Council, noted that a petition presented by the family of the deceased, has been referred to the penal committee instituted by the council to deal with cases of professional misconduct made against health officials.
According to him, the committee will soon meet on the case and take decision as to which way to go.
"There are already structures in place. We have a 'Penal Cases committee', which does the initial investigations. So, that is already in place, and I can state that the case has been referred to the penal cases committee, which will be meeting pretty soon on the case", Dr. Atikpui noted.
The latest development followed a petition received by the Dental and Medical Council from the family of the deceased.
Abigail Boateng died with a-three-month-old pregnancy after she was allegedly neglected by some health officials at the Korle-Bu polyclinic.
Sister to the deceased, Jessica Boateng had indicated that the doctors and nurses then on duty, did not treat the deceased well.
The health officials were said to have refused Abigail a bed to lie on, when she complained of back-ache and reluctantly administered drip on her, in a wheel chair and some medication after which she was asked to leave the hospital even when she complained of being weak.
Abigail Boateng was said to have been taken to a private hospital from where they were referred to the Gynecology department of the Korle-Bu Teaching hospital.
She then died shortly after she returned to the Korle-Bu Teaching hospital.
Even though an autopsy report linked Abigail Boateng's death to ectopic pregnancy, her family insists that negligence on the part of the health workers caused it.
Head of the Polyclinic, Dr. David Nortey had also indicated that all medical staff, who were on duty at the time the incident occurred, are being investigated.
