Barcelona's Lionel Messi voted Best International Athlete and LA Galaxy's David Beckham wins Best MLS Player at the 2012 ESPY
Barcelona sensation Lionel Messi has been voted the Best International Athlete in last night's 2012 ESPY Awards ceremony in Los Angeles.
The 25-year-old Argentine supremo held off competition from a host of the world's biggest sports stars from a range of different fields including Serbian tennis ace Novak Djokovic, LPGA Championship winner Yani Tseng, as well as Real Madrid rival Cristiano Ronaldo.
Messi will have to make room in his already bursting trophy cabinet after scooping his latest award - which is recognition for his record-breaking season at Camp Nou in 2011-12.
The pint-sized magician scored 50 goals in La Liga, and 73 goals in total last campaign, with 29 assists in all competitions to boot. Messi also finished as the UEFA Champions League's top scorer for a fourth consecutive season with 14 goals.
Voted by the fans, Messi receives the award for his Excellence in Sports Performance - an accolade started in 1993 by sports network ESPN to recognise both individual and collective team achievements.
NBA star LeBron James was the big winner on the night, walking away with a trio of trophies after being voted Best Male Athlete, Best NBA Player, and winning the Best Championship Performance award.
'King James' also shared the Best Team of the Year accolade with Miami Heat.
Meanwhile, LA Galaxy midfielder David Beckham scooped the Best MLS Player Award, to ease the disappointment of his omission from Stuart Pearce's Team GB squad at the 2012 London Olympics later this month.
