The flagbearer of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), Professor John Evans Atta Mills has expressed his condolences with Russia following the death of Mr Boris Yeltsin.
Mr Yeltsin was the immediate past president of Russia. He died in Moscow on Monday 23rd April, 2007.
In a letter to the Russian Ambassador to Ghana, Mr Pokrovskiy, Prof. Mills said: “As I share in your sorrow, I hope you take consolation in the fact that Mr. Boris Yeltsin served his motherland to the best of his ability and has left a lasting impression on the minds of Russians and the world at large.”
He recalled that the relationship between Ghana and Russia dates back to the era of Ghana’s independence and has strengthened to date.
“Ghana has always had a close relationship with Russia right from the days of our first President, Kwame Nkrumah and as Vice President of Ghana between 1996 and 2000, I personally had lots of dealings with Russia at the time that Mr. Yeltsin was President of your country and can say without equivocation that the supreme interest of Russia was foremost on his mind,” the letter mentioned.
It ended: “My thoughts and that of my party are with you in these times.”
Meanwhile, the state funeral of Mr Yeltsin is taking place in Moscow.
