Information Minister-designate and co-chair of the Local Planning Committee for the 3rd African Media Convention, Fatimatu Abubakar, has stated that the media plays a pivotal role in addressing climate change across the African continent.
Speaking at the 3rd Africa Media Convention in Accra, she emphasised the continent’s rich biodiversity and diverse ecosystems, which are particularly vulnerable to the adverse effects of climate change.
In her address, Fatimatu Abubakar highlighted that the responsibility of the media in fostering awareness, promoting dialogue, and advocating for sustainable solutions cannot be overstated. “The African continent, with its rich biodiversity and diverse ecosystems, is particularly vulnerable to the adverse effects of climate change. Hence, the media cannot overstate the responsibility it bears in fostering awareness, promoting dialogue, and advocating sustainable solutions,” she stated.

Abubakar pointed out that the media serves as a key ally in advancing efforts to combat environmental challenges. By amplifying the voices of communities affected by environmental degradation and advocating for policies that safeguard the planet, the media plays a critical role in driving change and ensuring that the needs and concerns of the most vulnerable populations are heard.
“The media, as a key ally in advancing these efforts, plays a pivotal role in amplifying the voices of communities affected by environmental degradation and advocating policies that safeguard the planet for future generations,” she added.

The convention, which brings together journalists, media professionals, and environmental advocates from across the continent, provides a platform for discussing the media’s role in addressing some of Africa’s most pressing environmental issues. Topics such as sustainable development, climate resilience, and the role of journalism in environmental advocacy are central to the discussions.
Abubakar’s remarks have resonated with many attendees, highlighting the importance of collaboration between media and environmental organisations to foster greater public understanding and drive policy changes.
The 3rd African Media Convention continues to serve as a significant forum for such crucial conversations, aiming to strengthen the media's capacity to inform and engage the public on environmental issues.
The minister’s call to action serves as a reminder of the critical need for informed and proactive media engagement in the fight against climate change, ensuring that the continent’s unique ecosystems and the livelihoods dependent on them are protected for future generations.
