Youth and Sports Minister, Clement Kofi Humado says the tragic events of May 9 2001 have necessitated plans to beef up paramedic arrangements at all match centers. The question is regularly asked whether paramedic arrangements at sports events especially big football games at club and national team levels have been improved over the years considering the lack of it accounted for the loss of lives at the Accra Sports Stadium eleven years ago. According to Hon. Clement Kofi Humado who led the commemoration of 11 years of Africa’s worst sporting disaster on Wednesday, his outfit is ensuring emergency situations like that of the stampede that claimed over 120 lives during the stadium disaster do not reoccur with the improvement of medical facilities at sports events. “We are introducing some modalities into our activities in reducing the impact of disaster on our society”. “The medical team are now up and doing and we have introduced an element of first aid for spectators in the stadia”. “There is a general awareness of commitment but i think we need to move a step forward and institutionalised the commitments through activities and advocacy programmes”.
