The National Democratic Congress’ parliamentary candidate for the Mion constituency in the Northern Region, Mohammed Abdul-Aziz, has described as laughable a challenge by one of the defeated candidates who is seeking to overturn the results in court.
Medical Practitioner, Dr. Mawia Zacharia lost the primaries by 13 votes to Mr. Abdul-Aziz who polled 1652 votes.
The incumbent MP, Deputy Minister of the Food and Agriculture, Dr Alhassan Ahmed Yakubu, came third in the race.

But Dr. Mawia Zacharia says he was cheated. He has filed a writ at the Tamale High court asking the court to annul results in one of the polling stations, order a recount in four others, and declare him winner.
Reacting to the concerns, Mr. Abdul-Aziz told Joy news’ Joseph Opoku Gakpo: “I find most of the claims in the writ rather laughable…And I can only meet him in court, and I can assure him I will hand him a second defeat.”
“You don’t need to be a lawyer to discount the writ,” he added.
Mr. Abdul Aziz has however written to the national and regional executives of the party asking them to show interest in the case.
The suit cites the Electoral Commission and the winner as defendants, but not the NDC. Mr. Abdul Aziz says the party which asked the Electoral Commission to conduct the elections on its behalf must support his defense of the case.
