Some Ghanaians who were feared dead in Japan following the deadly earthquake cum tsunami that struck the country have been found.
The Foreign Affairs Minister, Alhaji Mohammed Mumuni confirming the news to Citi News said, most of the people who were reported missing last week have been found and added to the list of Ghanaians to be relocated.
He added that Ghana’s Mission in Japan has concluded plans to move its citizens out of Tokyo and other earthquake affected areas.
The mission is currently operating from South Korea where it has settled temporarily.
According to Alhaji Mumuni, the mission is carrying out a search to locate the rest of the missing Ghanaians in Japan.
“Yesterday (Sunday)we heard from our brothers and sisters in Japan; our mission in Tokyo has been quite active trying to find out where our citizens are. They have even given us a list of our citizens whose whereabouts were unknown in the severely affected areas and they have been doing a follow up report on them.”
This confirms the earlier position by Ghana’s Mission in Japan that no Ghanaian life has so far been lost in the Friday March 11, 2011 earthquake and tsunami that hit Japan. The disaster, said to be the worst after the World War II bombings of Nagasaki and Hiroshima, has claimed several lives with the death toll still rising.
Japanese police have so far confirmed close to 10,000 deaths, but the final toll is expected to be much higher. Tens of thousands of people have been evacuated from the area around the Fukushima nuclear plant, which was also affected by the quake.
