Moldova has officially endorsed Morocco’s autonomy plan as the “most serious and credible basis” for resolving the regional dispute over the Moroccan Sahara.
This declaration was made in a Joint Statement following talks in Chișinău between Moldova’s Foreign Minister Mihai Popșoi and Morocco’s Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita, who is on a working visit to Moldova.
Moldova also voiced full support for Morocco’s “sincere efforts” to reach a final solution. Minister Popșoi reaffirmed his country’s backing for a UN-led process that ensures a just, pragmatic, and sustainable political resolution.
Both nations agreed that the UN must lead the political process. They pledged support for Security Council Resolution 2756 (2024), which calls for a compromise-based, realistic, and lasting solution. They also expressed confidence in the UN Secretary-General’s Personal Envoy and the work of MINURSO.
Beyond diplomacy, the two countries committed to strengthening bilateral ties across multiple sectors. In their Joint Declaration, both ministers praised the strong relations between their nations and promised to deepen political, economic, and cultural cooperation.
A Morocco-Moldova business forum is in the works, aimed at boosting partnerships in agriculture, energy, fertilisers, digital tech, industrial subcontracting, and cybersecurity. The countries also plan to enhance ties between their diplomatic academies.
Several agreements were signed during the visit, including:
- A MoU on political consultations between their foreign ministries.
- A MoU on economic diplomacy.
- A MoU between diplomatic institutes for exchange and training.
- A visa exemption agreement for diplomatic, service, and special passport holders.
- A MoU on cultural cooperation.
Both ministers reaffirmed their shared commitment to peace, security, and respect for territorial integrity. Minister Popșoi praised Morocco as a stable regional power and key driver of growth in Africa. Minister Bourita welcomed Moldova’s progress toward EU membership and praised its reform efforts.
The two leaders pledged continued coordination within international organisations.
