MTN Ghana, in partnership with the Domestic Violence and Victim Support Unit (DOVVSU) in the Savannah Region, has held a spirited debate competition between Yabum JHS and Jakpa JHS as part of the global 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence.

This year’s campaign focuses on the theme, “Unite to end digital violence against all women and girls.”

The students debated the motion, “Teaching boys and girls the same thing about online respect and digital safety will prevent violence.”

Yabum JHS, which argued in favour, emerged winner with 84 points, while Jakpa JHS, arguing against, followed closely with 74 points.

Judges praised both teams for their research depth, confidence and sharp rebuttals. “Our pupils have shown that they understand the realities of the digital world and the importance of equality,” one of the judges said.

Awards were presented to outstanding debaters, and the headmaster of Yabum JHS received a Samsung tablet for leading the winning team.

After the contest, both schools appealed for improved internet access to support teaching and learning.

“We need WiFi to help us learn better and explore ICT fully,” one of the contestants said on behalf of her colleagues.

Chairman of the programme and GES Director for North Gonja District, Mr. Kofi Apeater Odum, described the initiative as timely and impactful.

“When young people understand digital respect, they grow into responsible digital citizens,” he noted.

ASP Sarpong Kumankumah, the Savannah Regional DOVVSU Commander, urged the students to seek help whenever they face any form of abuse.

“DOVVSU is your safe home. If anyone abuses you—online or offline—walk into our office without fear,” he assured.

Health and Education Portfolio Advisor at the MTN Ghana Foundation, Mr Ebenezer Terkpeh, highlighted MTN’s ongoing investments in digital education.

“MTN is building an AI and Robotics Centre at KNUST, and these two schools will be among the first in the region to visit and benefit when it is completed,” he revealed.

The competition ended with cheers for both schools as organisers and community members celebrated the confidence and brilliance of Damongo’s young debaters.
