Majority chief whip in Parliament, Mohammed Muntaka Mubarak is pushing for the House to ammend the University of Ghana Act (806) which grants powers to the University to restrict access to its campus.
The University of Ghana in accordance to this Act has restricted the use of its roads through the use of 400 cedi sticker to be embossed on vehicles.
Vehicles which do not have this sticker have been prevented from using three of the four entry and exit points of the university.
The policy has been a source of chaos with calls on the university to desist from implementing the policy.
Mohammed Muntaka Mubarak, who is also the Member of Parliament (MP) for Asawase in the Ashanti region has accused authorities of the University of bad faith,
In an interview with Joy News' parliamentary correspondent, Elton John Brobbey the MP said on July 22, 2010, when the law was under consideration in Parliament, he raised an objection against the power by the university to restrict access to the roads.
He was of the view that since there were some people within the university compound who are not members of the university as stipulated by the law, it would not be prudent for access to be restricted.
Alhaji Muntaka Mubarak noted that his concerns were muted after some professors from the university approached parliament with the explannation that the restriction was to prevent hooligans from invading the university.
"Four years down the line, we those who were vehemently opposing it have now been vindicated", he noted.
He therefore wants the Minister for Education to bring back the law to parliament for the House to deal conclusively with the matter.
Some members of parliament also shared their thoughts on the matter, asked the university council to re-visit the decision taken.
Meanwhile, the Speaker of Parliament has referred the issue to the joint parliamentary committee on education and roads to investigate and make recommendations.
