The flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party Nana Akufo Addo is the first among the nation’s frontline politicians to appear before the constitution review commission’s special consultation session. The sessions are meant for officials, including former and current Presidents, Speakers of Parliament, Chief Justices, Supreme Court Judges and Presidential candidates of political parties whose appointments and duties are clearly defined by the 1992 constitution. Nana Addo took his turn yesterday after Retired Supreme Court Judge Justice Kpegah. He spoke to Joy News after three hours with the commission even though he would not disclose details of the proceedings. He said the meetings were “closed-door hearings and we take the view that they are confidential discussions [but] in due course, after discussions with the Commission, we will let you what is it that we have decided.” The Executive Secretary of the Commission, Raymond Atuguba, explained the closed-door sessions are to guarantee confidentiality to make the individuals comfortable enough to speak their minds. He said if the Commission releases the contents of the discussions to the media, “It might [make] those who are coming later on, like His Excellency Kufuor and His Excellency Rawlings, to restrain themselves from saying what they might want to say.” The Commission is scheduled to meet former President Jerry Rawlings and John Agyekum Kufuor next week.
