Officials of the National Security have taken over investigations into the fake drugs scandal that has hit Ghana’s healthcare sector.
The Food and Drugs Authority uncovered what it described as ‘dangerous drugs’ imported into the country and supplied to hospitals by three pharmaceutical companies. The drugs are Egormetrine and Syntocinon.
The FDA says it will prosecute the companies involved in the importation of the fake drugs.
Health Minister Sherry Ayittey told Joy News the action is criminal and government will ensure that the law takes its course.
Some people might have died using the fake drugs, the minister surmised.
Speaking on Joy FM’s Top Story on Monday, Madam Sherry Ayittey said pharmaceutical companies found importing fake drugs into the country could also be blacklisted.
Meanwhile, the FDA has begun clearing out all the fake drugs from pharmacies and hospitals throughout the country.
Head of Drug Post-Surveillance Unit at the FDA, Thomas Amedzro told Joy News all the drugs identified to be fake will be retrieved and destroyed.
