The National Democratic Congress (NDC) caucus in Parliament is demanding an immediate apology from the New Patriotic Party (NPP) caucus leader, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, for what they describe as "unwarranted personal attacks" against the Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin.
The NDC has accused Afenyo-Markin, who leads the NPP caucus, of using derogatory language toward the Speaker in recent media engagements.
In a statement issued on Friday, November 8, the NDC caucus expressed dismay over the Effutu legislator's decision to initiate an urgent parliamentary recall for the third time this year, only to subsequently abandon the session along with other members of the NPP caucus.
According to the NDC, Afenyo-Markin failed to attend the session and instead embarked on a "vitriolic media campaign" against the Speaker, Alban Bagbin.
The NDC caucus criticised Afenyo-Markin’s conduct, describing his comments as "unparliamentary and unbecoming of a Minority Leader."
They argued that the Speaker has always acted firmly to uphold the Constitution and maintain the dignity of Parliament, and thus does not deserve the “unfair and disrespectful attacks” from Afenyo-Markin.
The NDC also accused Afenyo-Markin of repeatedly misusing parliamentary procedures for personal reasons, cautioning him to refrain from further abuse of constitutional provisions for recall without genuine need.
They called on Ghanaians to condemn the NPP for what they consider an irresponsible use of taxpayer resources and a disregard for parliamentary integrity.
Additionally, the NDC caucus urged Afenyo-Markin to set aside his ego and issue a public apology to Speaker Bagbin, whom they described as a seasoned statesman dedicated to upholding the principles of democratic governance.
