A founding member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Mr Kofi Mintah, has exhorted the party’s Members of Parliament not to discourage or prevent people who desire to contest their positions during the upcoming parliamentary primaries.
Such actions, he said, were against the spirit and practice of democracy.
Addressing a meeting at Winneba on Thursday, Mr Mintah, who was the First Central Regional Chairman of the party, said a lot of problems would be created for the party if the MPs did not allow people interested to contest them.
Democracy, according to him, enjoined participation of more people in the primaries for the best to be elected and added that if the MPs - who had held that position for about three years feared to be challenged, then it meant that they did not perform their duties as expected.
He said those who knew they had related well with their constituents would welcome others to contest them while urging constituency executives to ensure that transparency and a level playing field were created for the primaries to avoid the situation where people contest the parliamentary election as independent candidates.
Mr Mintah advised NDC supporters to remain resolute in their support for the party and urged them to stand firm against machinations of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to break the front of the ruling party.
He warned supporters of the NDC should beware of “lions which will put on the skin of goats” to fan trouble within the party.
