The opposition National Democratic Congress has embarked on a march to commemorate the Founder’s Day celebration of Ghana’s founding President Dr Kwame Nkrumah.

Hundreds of supporters joined the march which started as early as 6:00 am Thursday on the birthday of Dr Kwame Nkrumah.

Even though the march was initially christened as the Unity walk to foster unity in the party, the objective of the march was changed in the wake of the controversy triggered by a proposal by the president to establish a Founders’ Day holiday on August 4.

The president also proposed that even though the September 21 holiday will be maintained it shall cease to be referred to as the Founder's Day and rather be known as the Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Day.

Members of the CPP as well the NDC have kicked against the proposal. The Founder's Day Memorial march is part of the actions by the NDC to oppose the suggestion.

The supporters of the party went through the principal streets of Accra before converging at the Hearts Park close to the Kwame Nkrumah Museum where the leaders addressed the multitude of supporters.

The march was attended by national executives of the party as well as former appointees, MPs, among others.

Speaker after speaker berated the decision by the president to institute a Founders Day holiday to recognize the diverse roles played by others, including JB Danquah, Paa Grant, etc in the fight for independence.

They accused the president of attempting to distort the political history of Ghana and vowed to resist any such attempt.

Slightly departing from the narrative of the day, the chairman of the NDC Kofi Portuphy says the party will be embarking on a reregistration of all its members across the country.

Joy News’ Hannah Odame who followed the march reported the chairman as saying all cards have thus been declared as null and void.

Portuphy said the reregistration will begin from the constituency through to the district, regional and national levels.
