Gynaecologist/Obstetrician specialist Dr Promise Sefogah has highlighted key risk factors associated with fibroids in women.
Speaking on Joy FM’s Super Morning Show, Dr Sefogah explained that fibroids occur when cells in the womb begin to multiply uncontrollably, forming lumps that often occur in multiples. “The exact cause is still under research, but we know several factors that contribute to their development,” he said.
Obesity is a major risk factor. Dr Sefogah explained that excess weight leads to higher estrogen levels, which fibroids feed on. “If the uterus is not carrying a pregnancy, estrogen levels remain high, allowing fibroids to continue growing,” he said. Pregnancy, however, can temporarily interrupt this cycle, reducing the likelihood of fibroid development.
Fibroids can also grow larger during pregnancy, as the increased blood supply to the uterus and placenta can feed the growths, Dr Sefogah added.
Dietary habits further influence risk. High consumption of animal products, particularly red meat, has been linked to increased fibroid development. There is also a genetic component, he noted, meaning daughters of women with fibroids are more likely to develop them.
When asked about lifestyle, Dr Sefogah said maintaining a healthy BMI is crucial. “Being obese increases the likelihood of developing fibroids, so managing weight can help reduce the risk,” he explained.
He also highlighted the connection between hypertension in women and fibroid risk, urging women to take preventive measures such as reducing salt intake to minimise their chances of developing the condition.
Fibroids are a common reproductive health issue, but awareness of these risk factors and adopting a healthy lifestyle can play a significant role in prevention and management.
