The Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU), in collaboration with the Ghana National Road Safety Commission (NRSC), has introduced a new retro-reflective sticker for vehicles.
The retro-reflective sticker is a safety mechanism to be posted on designated parts of vehicles to ensure visibility of packed or disabled vehicles at night.
The launching ceremony held in Accra, attracted commercial drivers and their union executives from national and the local levels.
The programme offered the drivers the platform to share their concerns with their leaders and other stakeholders present.
Speaking on the importance of the retro-reflective sticker, David Osafo Adonteng, Director of Rescarch, Monitoring and Evaluation at the NRSC, said it had been tried and tested worldwide, adding it had more reflective features to boost drivers ability to see disabled vehicles way ahead on the roads.
He said it would reduce the accidents resulting from disabled vehicles parked on roads, stressing that drivers should embrace it.
Mr Adonteng said with the introduction of the new retro-reflective sicker, its main focus would be on vehicles weighing 3.5 tonnes and above.
He reminded drivers of their role to ensure the safety of their commuters, while assuring that more safety measures would be put in place to minimise accidents.
Mr Adonteng hinted that a policy would soon be introduced to ensure that all commercial drivers belonged to a union for monitoring and control of drivers.
The drivers called on the government to impress upon vehicle owners to register the national pension scheme.
This, according to the drivers, would go a long way to ensure the necessary financial security to cater for their old age when they had retired from active driving.
The drivers also called on the government to redouble its efforts at installing street tights on major roads and streets to improve visibility at night.
