Parliament on Thursday, paid a tribute to the late Member of Parliament (MP) for Wulensi, Alhaji Saani Iddi, and described him as a man of peace who worked tirelessly to bring peace to his area which was prone to conflicts.
The late MP, who died last Monday at the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital, was buried on Wednesday in accordance with the customs and traditions of the Islamic religion.
All the MPs who contributed to the tribute read by the Majority Leader, Mr. Cletus Avoka, were unanimous in their contributions that the late Alhaji Iddi, was a peacemaker who was respected by both the Konkombas and Nanumbas, the two dominant tribes in his area.
In his tribute, Mr Avoka said the late Alhaji Iddi’s humility and appeal to both sides of the House was readily recognised by President J.E.A Mills who accordingly appointed him as the Deputy Minister for Water Resources, works and Housing in 2009.
“Madam Speaker, our colleague was without doubt, a humble and quiet person. He showed respect to everybody irrespective of that person’s position. He remained loyal and faithful to the course of this House and his constituency. He was indeed affable”.
He said the MP was in his constituency performing his parliamentary duties in relation to the just ended Biometric Voters’ Registration Exercise when he was taken ill and ended up in the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital.
Mr Avoka extended the condolence of the House to the bereaved family and gave assurance that the House would support the family in giving the late Alhaji Saani a befitting farewell.
Contributing to the tribute, the NPP MP for Okere, Mr. Dan Botwe said that even though the late Alhaji Saani was quiet and unassuming, “he was somebody who was respected by both major tribes in his area and cut across both the NPP and NDC”.
The First Deputy Speaker, Mr Edward Doe Adjaho described the late MP as a man of conviction explaining that “even though he was a man of few words, he approached every work with great passion”.
The NPP MP for Bimbilla, Mr Dominic Nitiwul, who said the late Saani inspired him to enter into politics, praised the deceased for contributing to efforts to bring peace in the Nanumba area.
The late Alhaji Saani, 56, first entered Parliament in January 1997 after winning the parliamentary election in Wulensi on the ticket of the NPP.
He served his full term in the House but lost the seat in 2000 parliamentary election.
He was, however appointed as the District Chief Executive for Nanumba District in 2001 and returned to Parliament as an Independent MP in January 2012.
