The National Lottery Authority has filed a writ at the Accra Fast Track Court to prevent the state broadcaster GBC from announcing the results of private lotto draws.
The NLA is also suing for past broadcasts by GBC since 2006 because it says by ignoring the law banning the private lotto business and announcing the results of their draws, it contributed to a loss of revenue to the authority.
The NLA’s Public Relations Officer, Reagan Twum-Barimah told Joy Business after filing the processes in court the authority had been forced to take this action after several failed attempts to get GBC to comply with the law.
He said the state broadcaster by announcing the results of outlawed lotto operators was emboldening the operation and condoning crimes against the state.
“More so it is also affecting our market share because if you have people who are duly registered, who pay taxes, who work for the state and pay taxes not being suffocated out of the market, we [must] make sure that law takes it course,” he said.
Though he concedes there has been pressure from members of the lotto receivers union, he explains it is just one of the reasons.
