The National Media Commission (NMC) has issued a stern warning to media outlets, urging them to exercise greater caution in the content they broadcast.
The commission has indicated its readiness to impose penalties on organizations that violate established regulations.
This warning came during a regulatory meeting focused on offensive media content with various radio and TV stations on Thursday, October 31.
NMC Chairman Yaw Boadu-Ayeboafo expressed significant concern regarding the programming choices of numerous media outlets, emphasising the need for heightened responsibility in broadcasting.
He pointed out that the commission had received nearly 9,000 complaints this year, which included issues related to sexual content, money laundering, and loan fraud, implicating over 40 media organizations in the process.
Among those highlighted was Oyerepa TV, which was specifically cited for airing explicit material.
However, the management of Oyerepa TV expressed disappointment at being singled out in the NMC’s report, arguing that the criticism was unwarranted.
Despite this, the commission stood by its actions, asserting that the level of obscenity broadcast by Oyerepa TV posed significant harm to viewers.
The NMC suggested that it may refer the matter of Oyerepa TV to the National Communications Authority (NCA), which could consider revoking the station's license due to its ongoing violations.
In a related development, the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) criticized the NCA for lacking a clear roadmap in the digital migration process, questioning its commitment to upholding broadcasting standards.
In response, the NCA reassured the public of its proactive role in monitoring and regulating the sector, emphasising its dedication to maintaining a responsible media landscape.
