The Head of the Political Science Department at the University of Ghana says the internal competition within the New Patriotic Party (NPP) for MP seats will contribute to enhancing democratic involvement.
Dr Alidu Seidu emphasised how crucial it is for elected leaders to be held accountable.
Speaking to JoyNews on Thursday, January 4, he expressed worry whether the people running for the party are qualified and capable.
He highlighted the necessity for a careful selection process to pick the best candidates.
Dr Seidu said it is a delicate balance between promoting competition and making sure the candidates are right for the job.
“Representation is largely for the people, so basically, the people should have the ultimate say in determining who would represent them, but when you are contesting on the ticket of a political party, you have to prove your membership, your commitment, and your loyalty to the party affirmative and the political party that may qualify you for their ticket."
According to Dr. Seidu, historically, individuals in government positions have competed against internal members to represent others.
He pointed out that every MP chosen within the NPP must demonstrate their value, capability, dedication, service, and loyalty to the constituency.
Dr Seidu emphasised that if aspiring MPs fail to meet these standards, they risk being excluded from the competition during the vetting process.
"So basically, I like the competitiveness; I like the fact that people are very bold and putting the game to the incubate MP and challenging them to the task of representing the constituency.
"It is very good, and I like it as a democratic state,” Dr Seidu said.
