Two former supporters of NPP flagbearer hopeful Kennedy Agyapong have declared their support for former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia to become the party’s presidential candidate for the 2028 elections.
The two — NPP Constituency Chairman for Jomoro, Mathew Nda, and former MCE for Evalue Ajomoro Gwira, Eric Essien — announced their unflinching support for Dr. Bawumia during his campaign tour of Jomoro in the Western Region on Monday, November 3, 2025.
Both party figures paid tribute to Dr. Bawumia, praising his humility, character, and national appeal, which they said make him the right choice to lead the NPP back to power.
“His humility is remarkable. Even though he has risen to the position of Vice President, he remains so humble and accords everyone respect,” said Mathew Nda, the Jomoro Constituency Chairman.
“These are the qualities we want in someone to occupy the seat of President. So, on behalf of our delegates, as Chairman of the constituency, I declare that we are going for Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia,” he added, drawing loud cheers from delegates.
For his part, former MCE Eric Essien described Dr. Bawumia as the most marketable candidate to win power for the NPP, urging delegates to be guided by history and retain him — just as the party did with John Agyekum Kufuor and Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo before they became Presidents.
“As a former MCE, I know politics is about numbers. When someone already has the numbers, you keep the person and add up,” he said.
“Our first President, Kufuor, got 39% on his first attempt, and we didn’t replace him — we supported him, and he won power. Akufo-Addo also didn’t win the first time, but we stood by him three times until the God of Israel opened the door for him.”
“Former Vice President Bawumia got 41%, and he’s very close to the mark. Some things happened, and our own supporters didn’t vote, which affected us after eight years in power. Let’s not change our candidate — it would be a big mistake. Let’s vote for him massively and rally behind him to win the 2028 election.”
Dr. Bawumia has been campaigning in the Western Region since the weekend, and the endorsement from two respected former Kennedy Agyapong supporters is seen by political observers as a significant boost to his momentum in the region.
