President John Mahama has predicted the NPP’s free Senior High School education policy will suffer the same setback as it happened in Kenya and Uganda, because they adopted that system. The NPP and its flagbearer Nana Akufo-Addo have promised to review basic education and make it free to the secondary school level. According to Nana Akufo-Addo, if countries like Zimbabwe, Lesotho, Uganda and Kenya could make SHS free for their citizens, he saw no reason why a country like Ghana, which was endowed with cocoa, timber, diamond, gold, manganese, bauxite, oil among others, could not make SHS free. Addressing a rally at Okere in the Eastern Region however, President Mahama said for lack of adequate planning and the rush to adopt this policy, those countries are now calling for support from other countries. He said: “Our programme is that between 2013 and 2016 we are going to eliminate all cost that parents bear at the basic level. We are going to make education universal by eliminating all schools under trees so that every community where children are they can have an opportunity to go to school.” Admitting that though free SHS is good, the President said it cannot be done now for lack of adequate infrastructure and more teachers. He said it is for this reason that his government is promising the construction of 200 SHS and then teacher training colleges across the country. At the Koforidua Polytechnic, President Mahama told a large gathering of students that his government had plans of converting polytechnics across the country into full-fledged technical universities. He said it is for this reason that his government must be voted for again to implement these policies.
