Ghana’s flagship orphanage, the Osu Children’s Home, may be forced to close down as the home has run out of food and water with which to feed orphans in the home.
The was revealed by the Director of the Home, Madam Sharon Abbey in a chat with Adom News’ Kofi Adomah, after she received a donation worth over Gh¢10,000 comprising food stuffs and provisions from the General Overseer of Mighty Chapel International, Pastor Chief Mensah.
According to Madam Abbey, the home has suffered so much after the bad publicity it got from the exposé by investigative journalist Anas Aremeyaw Anas last year, which has seen donations to the Orphanage dwindle significantly.
Anas Aremeyaw Anas uncovered some rot at the orphanage that were captured on video, which was widely condemned locally and internationally.
The footage revealed untold mistreatment inmates are subjected to at the orphanage which is supervised by the Ministry of Employment and Social Welfare.
The chilling revelations showed how caretakers of the orphanage shared gifts and donations meant for inmates amongst themselves and haul some to their homes.
The Home spends Gh¢150 weekly on sachet water alone, plus additional cost for the supply of water by tankers service providers for other chores.
The situation has been compounded by the malfunctioning of the borehole which supplies water to the Home.
“We have ran out of food and yesterday while I was in the kitchen it was my prayer that God will do a miracle.
In fact the donations have reduced drastically because of the bad publicity, we are doing our best to deal with it so the public trust can be regained. Currently, we buy water because of the season and it is not easy at all” Madam Abbey lamented.
The General Overseer of Mighty Chapel International, Pastor Chief Mensah called on philanthropists to consider the children and give their widow’s might to help sustain the home.
He said the Mighty Church plans to build an Orphanage to support orphans but until that is done, “the church will continue this gesture to the inmates at the Osu Children’s Home”, Pastor Mensah revealed.
