The International Central Gospel Church (ICGC) has issued a statement on behalf of its General Overseer Dr. Mensah Otabil denying the authenticity of a recent tape that allegedly captures him describing free Senior High School (SHS) as a myth.
Speaking for the ICGC, Senior Associate Minister Reverend Kofi Okyere said that the original tape, which he claimed was rearranged to take Otabil’s words out of context, came from a speech that was probably between 6 and 10 years old.
While the church has yet to find the original recording, he assured the public that it was working diligently to do so.
Speaking on Joy FM’s Super Morning Show Tuesday, the Reverend Kofi Okyere explained that the comments were actually made in reference to University education, not Senior High School and emphatically insisted that, Otabil had not issued these comments from the pulpit.
He added that Otabil and the ICGC both believe in education as a basic right but that they want to avoid taking sides in political debates. Instead, he said, Otabil is more concerned with electoral peace.
Rev. Okyere was careful to point to the ICGC’s record on free education, explaining that on holidays and weekends, the church offers free classes that feature instructors, school supplies, and meals for students.
