Parliament will this week consider removing the Talensi legislator, Robert Masore Nachinab Doameng, following his repeated absenteeism from the House.
The MP has been absent from Parliament since May when he was enskinned as Paramount Chief of Talensi.
Proposals from the Majority in Parliament has been consistent in pushing for the Upper East Region seat be declared vacant due to Mr Doameng absenteeism.
Majority Chief Whip, Mohammed Mubarak Muntaka, who has been championing the cause to remove the Talensi MP insists his colleague’s action is damaging the dignity of the House.
“As lawmakers, we need to uphold the dignity of the House. Once we have rules and regulations that we set for ourselves it is only prudent that we abide by them, and anytime we are in doubt we need to look at our Standing Orders and our Constitution to be able to find answers”, he told Joy News.
Per Parliament’s Standing Orders “A Member shall not absent himself during a meeting for more than fifteen sittings without the permission in writing of the Speaker. Any Member infringing this Order shall have his conduct referred to the Privileges Committee.”
MPs pushing for the Talensi MP’s removal have also cited his inability to officially inform Parliament of his new status as chief or sought permission to be absent.
Mr Mubarak who is MP for Asawase said removing the Talensi MP would be fair to the people of the Constituency since the new status of Mr Doameng as a chief is making him incapable of performing his law-making duties.
