The Joint Parliamentary Select Committee on roads and local government Friday visited Weija to assess the impact of the operations of the Saba landfill site on the community. This follows complaints from the people that the facility is having an adverse environmental impact on them.Chiefs in the area have given the managers of the site a 10-day ultimatum to rectify the situation or face ejection from the site.Joy News’ Eric Ahianyor who was with the delegation, reported that the committee members met with the chiefs to try and understand their concerns and to find a common ground between the chiefs and the waste management companies. The ranking member of the Committee, Mr Maxwell Kofi Jumah said members of the committee conveyed to the chiefs the appreciation of Ghanaians for their generosity in allowing the area to be used as a landfill site.He said it was particularly important for the concerns of the people to be addressed because of the cholera epidemic ravaging parts of the country. The Operations Manager of waste management company Zoomlion, Mr Lawrence Laryea, said they had already started constructing drains to meet the demands of the chiefs. He said they were also spraying the area with disinfectants to minimise the stench and other health hazards.Source: Joy News/Ghana
