Photo of the week gets results: AMA desilts city

Authorities at Accra Metropolitan Assembly have moved to clean choked drains within the city following myjoyonline.com’s report.

The starting point – drainage at the Obetsebi Lamptey Roundabout where photojournalist David Andoh captured squalor of empty bottles and packs choking the drain.

That report was on May 9. By Wednesday May 15, 2019, maintenance engineers and caterpillars had moved to that stretch of the road to desilt the drain.

It is expected to continue along the Kwame Nkrumah Interchange. The entire area is flood-prone.

And Ghana’s poor drainage system is believed to exacerbate the effects of rainfall. A 40-minute shower in Accra and other parts of the country is likely to endanger life, properties and leave residents scurrying for safe places.

At least nine Ghanaians have died since April when Ghana’s rainy season began.
