Football enthusiasts in the Sunyani Municipality have been advised to avoid certain acts during jubilation so as not to endanger their lives during the ongoing Ghana 2008 soccer tournament. Assistant Superintendent of Police Ansu Frimpong, Brong-Ahafo Regional Commander of the Motor Traffic and Transport Unit (MTTU) of the Ghana Police Service, gave the advice the in an interview with the GNA Sports (GNA) in Sunyani on Wednesday. ASP Frimpong expressed concern about how some soccer fans, including taxi drivers in the Municipality overload their vehicles amid incessant tooting of horns in the streets any time Ghana’s Black Stars won a match. “The continued tooting of the horn is an offence as it disturbs public peace”, the MTTU Commander warned and admonished drivers to refrain from such acts or face the full rigours of the law, under section 298 Act 29 of 1960. He said the Regional MTTU intended to deploy more personnel at vantage and strategic points in the Municipality to help to clamp down on people who would disturb public peace during such occasions. ASP Frimpong cautioned the youth to desist from joining overloaded cars, particularly trucks, hanging on vehicles as well as blocking streets or roads to cause traffic jams in their jubilation, since that could pose a threat to their lives. Meanwhile a number of fans in the Municipality have expressed optimism that the Black Stars would overwhelm their Namibian counterparts in Thursday’s match to book a place in the quarter-final stage. Mr Kofi Attiogu, a car sprayer, told the GNA Sports: “As the team has started on the winning trail, there is no stopping or looking back and it is the prayer of every Ghanaian that the ‘Host and Win’ target will be achieved.” The expectant fans in the Municipality, including women are purchasing more paraphernalia in the national colours and decorating their vehicles and bodies in anticipation of another spectacular win against the Namibians for another stupendous jubilation. Most of those interviewed described the Namibians as soccer minnows, who could not “spoil our party”. “The Namibians cannot pose any problem to us and it is a forward march to the quarter finals where the Stars will prove their mettle that they are determined to win the cup for the fifth time”, Mr Stanley Yeboah, a drinking bar owner, told the GNA Sports.Source: GNA
