The police at Bawjiase in the Central Region have arrested three men on suspicion of stealing a taxi cab.
The Toyota Tercel cab with registration number GS 2135 10 was reported stolen overnight from the residence of its owner at Sakaman in Accra after its driver had parked it. The theft was reported to the Odorkor police in Accra.
Chief Inspector Elizabeth Esi Mensah, station master at the Bawjiase police station told Myjoyonline.com that the driver of the vehicle, who hails from the town, spotted the vehicle occupied by some unknown persons as it drove towards the Swedru road. He quickly alerted the police.
She said the taxi soon returned to town whereupon its occupants parked it near the market ostensibly to shop.
The police and other drivers who had been alerted waylaid the suspects and confronted them on their return.
A policeman who was part of the team that arrested the suspects also told Myjoyonline.com that when the suspects were asked to start the vehicle to be taken to the police station, the one driving the vehicle produced a pair of pliers instead of the car keys to start the car. A search on him also produced three driver’s licences and a police extract indicating documentation on the vehicle had expired but the driver had police permission to drive it to Accra for renewal.
Chief Inspector Elizabeth Esi Mensah said the police were awaiting the arrival of the owner of the vehicle to identify the vehicle to enable the police process the suspects for court.
