The Eastern Regional Police Commander, ACP Gyamerah-Yeboah, has cautioned drivers in the region to desist from hiring or chattering their cars to passengers during very late hours especially between 12am and 4am.
This is because of recent rampant reports of car snatching by armed robbers in the region, he explained.
Briefing The Ghanaian Times in Koforidua, he said "drivers rather risk their own lives and expose their cars to danger since they can be easily attacked by these armed robbers who mainly operate around that time".
For example, he revealed that last Saturday, at around 10pm, the police arrested a 25-year old unemployed Nigerian, Ongegbami Hosiah, who at knife-point attempted to snatch a KIA Pride taxi with registration number ER 256-09 from a driver, Nortey Wilson.
Prior to that, he said Hosiah had chattered the taxi for some rounds around 9pm to Nyamekrom, a suburb of Koforidua and later brought Wilson, back to Old Estate, also a suburb of Koforidua.
He said it was when the two reached Old Estates that Hosiah asked Wilson to drive through a rough road in the area which Wilson yielded to.
"Upon reaching the road, Hosiah then pulled a knife and attempted to snatch the car which Wilson refused to give to him and later resulted in a struggle," he said
Whilst they struggled, Wilson shouted for help and luckily enough, some people came to his aid; with one of them calling the Koforidua Central Police, for Hosiah's arrest.
ACP Gyamerah-Yeboah also narrated a similar incident at Akwapim on June 7 around 3am when two men managed to snatch an Opel taxi cab, GS 6581 from its driver after they had chattered it from Mamfe to Brekusu.
Considering these reports, ACP Gyamerah-Yeboah urged drivers in the Eastern Region to be cautious of their passengers and desist from driving during late hours.
